Celaena haworthii

Description: Wingspan 25-32 mm. Forewings reddish brown with a series of small black marks along the costa. Stigmata ochreous white and clearly defined the orbicular being quite small. World Distribution: Eurasiatic: common across most of western Europe from Portugal north to Denmark and central Fennoscandia.

In Fermanagh it is found in several widely scattered sites while north of Lough Neagh it has only been reported from coastal localities including Rathlin Island, Antrim. It may possibility be under recorded in some other areas since there is no shortage of suitable habitat.

Some may be found at rest on the stems of heather. They are also attracted to the flowers of heather Calluna vulgaris, Common Ragwort ~f4364~Senecio jacobaea~ and wood-rush Luzula spp. The larvae feed during the warmer days in spring through until July on cottongrass Eriophrum spp. and rush Juncus spp. It overwinters as an egg.
