Description: Wingspan 32-38 mm. Forewings are whitish brown with a marbled appearance. The stigmata are outlined in white and the postmedian and subterminal lines are whitish grey. Hindwings pale brown with a white fringe. Recorded in N. Ireland in August. Skinner gives July to September as the flight period.
World Distribution: A Holarctic species; in Europe it is fairly widespread in both upland and lowland habitats.
Irish Distribution: A rare immigrant to Ireland; recorded only twice in N. Ireland near Londonderry in 1875 by D.C. Campbell and Dundrum, Down in 1997. There appear to be only 2 other Irish records, one from Co. Sligo published by Kane and mentioned in Donovan (1936) and the other from Glenageary, Dublin in 1960.
Ecology: Resident populations of this species in Scotland are mainly associated with moorland habitats where Bog Myrtle Myrica gale occurs and is sheltered by trees. The larvae feed from September until late spring on Bog Myrtle. It overwinters as a larva.
