Peridroma saucia (Hubner, 1808)

Pearly Underwing

Peridroma saucia

Description: Wingspan 45-56 mm. Forewings are dark mottled brown with darker stigmata. Hindwings translucent with pale brown veining. A migrant species recorded between June and October in N. Ireland

World Distribution: Throughout Europe; scarce further north, although it has been recorded in Iceland. Probably resident in the Mediterranean.

Irish Distribution: An uncommon immigrant from southern Europe that appears sporadically in N. Ireland. There have been recent records from Murlough National Nature Reserve and Belfast Harbour Estate, Down; Peatlands Park, Armagh; Correl Glen National Nature Reserve and Crom, Fermanagh; and, Cullinane east of Fivemiletown, Tyrone.

Ecology: A species that is seen more frequently in the autumn months. Adults come frequently to light and will also visit various flowers. It is highly unlikely that the larvae of this species could survive our winters.
