Description: Wingspan 30-36mm. This is a variable species. The forewings are generally greyish green, often with a reddish tinge, and a dark central band. In some specimens the band is replaced by a series of dark wavy cross lines. The forewings have a pointed shape. From early September to the end of October and again after hibernation from mid-March to late May.
World Distribution: Throughout most of Europe to central Asia.
Irish Distribution: Widespread in southern counties, but scarcer north of Lough Neagh. Recorded from many new localities in the last few years as a result of increased fieldwork particularly in Fermanagh and parts of south Down. Its late flight period may account for its absence from apparently suitable sites in Londonderry and mid-Antrim; ongoing fieldwork in these counties may discover additional populations.
Ecology: An autumnal species that favours woodland habitats. It visits IvyHedera helix blossom during the autumn and, after hibernation, willow Salix spp. catkins. Adults come frequently to light in moderate numbers. The larvae feed on oak Quercus spp., birch Betula spp., Blackthorn Prunus spinosa, Rowan Sorbus aucuparia and Ash Fraxinus excelsior. Female moths hibernate from autumn to early spring.
