Eulithis populata (Linnaeus, 1758)

Northern Spinach

Eulithis populata

Description: Wingspan 33-40mm. The forewings are generally yellow with a darker brown central band and basal patch. Adults rests with the abdomen curled up. From mid-June to early August.

World Distribution: Across Europe and Asia to eastern Siberia.

Irish Distribution: Widely distributed, and most commonly encountered in southern counties. Baynes described this moth as common in Ireland but until the mid 1990s it would have been more appropriate to define its status in N. Ireland as scarce. Increased fieldwork in the last few years, especially in the west, has produced many new sites.

Ecology: Found mainly in mature woodlands, bogs and upland heathland. Adults are attracted to light in small numbers. The larvae feed on Bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus. It overwinters as an egg.

Key Identification Features:

  • Dark central band
  • Rests with the abdomen curled up
