| Reported: | His Collection of about 3, 000 specimens and slides was purchased by the BMNH in 1877. It includes both his foreign and British sponges, many of the latter being described in his 4 volume work, "A Monograph of the British Spongiadae" published in 1864, 1866, 1874 and posthumously by A.M. Norman in 1882. During his lifetime, Bowerbank donated specimens to the Royal College of Surgeons, London, but the collection was destroyed during an air-raid in March, 1941. It is not known exactly what has been lost from there, but an inventory will become available in time. So far, 8 sponges have been found none of which are types. |
