Abstract: An experiment using seven littoral species of operculate univalves and one bivalve species to determine the comparative capacity of the various species and the capacity of members of all species to tolerate exposure to air, immersion to abnormally saline water and to freshwater. The results are presented and show that high water individuals have a greater power of enduring exposure to air and immersion in freshwater than the low water or mud shore species, while they have a lesser power of enduring immersion in water of abnormal salinity. The relationship of the experiment to real life conditions and the particular adaptation of species to tolerate exposure are discussed.
