Abstract: This is a description of the Grey Seal and the Common Seal, both of which are commonly found in Irish waters, though the Grey Seal is more commonly captured. To aid identification, the distinguishing features of the two species are compared. The Ringed Seal, which is rare in British and Irish waters, is also described and compared to Common and Grey seals. Descriptions are based on museum specimens, and on observations of both adults and their young.
