Abstract: Cleggan Point, Ballynakill and High Island were surveyed for lichens. The most extensive lichen survey of this area, previous to this, was by Charles Larbalaster which found 466 species, indicating a very rich lichen flora. As the earlier lichenologists were much more concerned with collecting rare species, the present survey set out to record some of the more common species. The survey found a further 48 species and 6 varieties new to Galway. Many of these were recorded on the shores of the Cleggan Peninsula and Ballynakill, including several rare species, Verrucaria striatula and Arthopyrenia foreolata, which were new to Ireland. A number of littoral species were also found on High Island. A list of the species collected is presented with habitat and place of collection.
