Abstract: This is an attempt by the newly formed Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves to encourage people to support conservation of 'primitive' areas. These are areas which have retained their natural flora and fauna. The increasing pressures of development, population rise and the problem of species collecting were considered as important contributing factors to the loss of species and of primitive areas. Reference is made to Europe, Prussia, and America where attempts were being made to protect natural landscapes as reserves or parks.
