Abstract: The appearance and distribution of the Hooded Seal is described. Although this species is common in regions of the north Atlantic, its occurrence in the more southerly, British waters is unusual, with sightings in the Orkneys, Firth of Forth, and even as far south as France. In Ireland, this seal with a large inflatable sac on its head, was recorded from Iniscarrow Reef near Westport in 1836 and from Galway Bay in 1898.
