Abstract: This paper reports the first record of the invasive brown algal species Sargassum muticum in Ireland, at Strangford Lough, Co. Down. The international distribution of S. muticum is briefly outlined. It is believed that accidental introductions are associated with the transfer of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. There is concern about the impact of S. muticum on the coastal environment and resource use such as boating and aquaculture.
