Abstract: From 1982 to 1992 otter, Lutra lutra, signs (spraints, footprints etc.), sightings, and road casualties over a large area of east Cork and west Waterford were recorded. Five systematic surveys using different methods were carried out. The coastal survey yielded a total of 18 sprainting sites, and on virtually all occasions they were found around fresh water streams crossing beaches or trickling over cliffs. This has also been found to be the case on the west coast of Ireland. Seasonal trends were observed in coastal areas.
