Abstract: The past and present distribution of the oyster plant, Mertensia maritima, in Ireland is discussed. It grows more luxuriantly and flowers most profusely where seaweeds and other nutrient-rich debris are thrown upon it. In addition, the sea is the major dispersal agent of the seeds. Distributional records in Ireland are given, in addition to data on associated species, population counts and threats to extant Irish sites.
