Abstract: As part of a much wider baseline survey carried out in relation to the building of a large alumina plant on Aughinish Is., a survey of the plankton was conducted in 3 Co Limerick estuaries, the Shannon estuary and those of the Robertson and Deel Rivers between May 1979 and May 1980. In order to compare the contribution by microplankton taxa of widely different sizes, the results are expressed principally in terms of organic carbon biomass. Observations of temperature and salinity were obtained at selected depths and water density calculated. Microplankton (plankton in size range of 10-20 um) were collected by bucket (sampling water between 0-5 m). The predominant species was a dinoflagellate, Glenodinium foliaceum.
