Abstract: Some data are presented referring to an outbreak of red water in Lough Atalia, Co. Galway. The lough is a mixohaline inlet connected to the open sea by a narrow channel. It is tidal but the range is considerably smaller than Galway Bay, with a regular but restricted water exchange with the open sea. The organism responsible was the dinoflagellate Glenodinium foliaceum.
