Abstract: Paper discusses the effects of an oil spill on the littoral community within the harbour of Church Bay, Rathlin Island. Transects within the area and a similar (relief and exposure) unaffected area were carried out approximately 7 months after the spill. The area was also checked 2 years later. It was concluded that it was unlikely that the oil beached on Rathlin Island had any marked long-term adverse effects on the littoral community and that most damage was probably caused by the excessive application of oil dispersants.
