Abstract: This paper gives an account of an underwater sighting of the wreckfish, Polyprion americanus, associated with floating wreckage off southwest Ireland. A description of the fish and its behaviour is given based on 20 minutes of observation and study of several colour transparencies. 25 Irish records are listed and discussed. These data from 1847 onwards include location, estimated depth, methods, and circumstances of capture together with size measurements.
