Abstract: This paper reports on the findings of collections of encrusting red algae from several shores in Co. Galway. The shores varied from semi-exposed to exposed, but the plants were always found in situations with some protection from direct wave action. The dark red, fleshy encrustations were usually removed intact by chiselling off sections of rock. Small pieces of tissue were examined under a microscope. Although not previously recorded in Co. Galway, it as obvious from the author's observations that Petrocelis cruenta was quite common on Galway shores. Spores were attempted to be grown in culture, but did not meet with success. Some taxonomic discussion is given.
