Abstract: A short note on an experiment to assess the prospects of large scale farming of the American hard shelled clam Mercenaria mercenaria in Ireland in 1969. Clams (enclosed in plastic mesh covered timber frames, from which escape was unlikely) were introduced into four localities, namely Wexford Harbour, Bannow Bay, Co. Wexford, Cork Harbour and Oysterhaven, Co. Cork.
