Abstract: Paper presents synopsis (including species list) of a survey which recorded the composition of the flora and fauna of a strip of very flat shore (< 3 miles) along Belfast Lough from Merville, Whitehouse to Greenisland Hospital before construction work altered the habitat. Author states that the main factors controlling life on this foreshore are the type of rock, exposure to wave action and the deposition of large quantities of silt and sewage. All of these factors are discussed.
