Abstract: A brief report on an estimated 350,000 mortalities of marine animals (annelids, crustaceans, molluscs and echinoderms) during persistent gale force winds in January 1963. Rough seas were driven shorewards by easterly gales and coincided with Spring tides. Observations were made along the strand at half ebb tide from Laytown to the south of the Boyne river, Co. Meath. Animals were not strewn evenly, but concentrated in at least 5 patches. The various species and their densities on the beach are listed.
