Abstract: Paper initially presents a review of the International Union for the Protection of Nature (established at Fontainebleau, France 1948). One of the I.U.P.N.'s first actions 'was to endeavour to get a general picture of the position of nature protection and the conservation of natural resources throughout the world'. No report was then prepared for Ireland (since it had not become a member). Thus, this paper is an attempt 'to provide up-to-date (as of 1956) information about nature protection in Ireland. 'As suggested in I.U.P.N. (1951) information is given under the following headings: (1) General; (2) Soils; (3) Water; (4) Flora; (5) Fauna; (6) Minerals; (7) Reserves; (8) Monuments; (9) Organizations; (10) Education; (11) Conventions.
