Abstract: Paper briefly reviews the status of the twaite shad, Alosa fallax (previously A. finta), and the allis shad, Alosa alosa, in Irish waters. The two species have similar habitats and they are known to spawn in freshwater in some rivers, generally in the month of May. Some measurements are given for specimens of the twaite shad caught in the river Suir and Cork Blackwater.
