Abstract: This paper recounts the life of W.S. Green (1847-1919), 'minister of religion, fisherman, fishery inspector, explorer, mountaineer, geographer and historian [with] unbounded energy and enthusiasm for the sea and the welfare of all of those who fished the Irish coasts'. His pioneering deep-water cruises, his fisheries reports, career as a fishing inspector and encouragement of the Irish fishing industry are all dealt with.
