Abstract: Paper discusses water quality predictions and waste disposal in the Shannon Estuary, on the west coast of Ireland, as a case study of an Irish estuary. A preliminary study was carried out which showed deterioration of water quality due mainly to the discharge of untreated sewage and industrial wastes. It was concluded from this that future increased waste discharge might interfere with the passage of migratory fish. A mathematical model of water quality was developed and is discussed.
