Abstract: Samples of littoral sand from the south and southeast coasts of Ireland show a gradual decrease in biogenic carbonate content from west to east. Comparisons are made with material from the west of Ireland, N. Scotland and Brittany and the existence of a carbonate rich province along the Atlantic coasts of western Europe is proposed. An attempt is made to explain the existence of such a high-latitude carbonate rich area in oceanographic terms.
