Abstract: The paper describes the results of the first season's returns of the Species Recording Scheme, a project based on the recording card principle, designed for use by amateur divers. Selected results of the scheme illustrate the type of information intended for final publication of the project. This includes details of the environment which amateur divers habitually visit, and aspects of the distribution of important sublittoral species. The geographical distribution of records received of Alcyonium digitatum for the north east coast are plotted on a map of the British Isles.
