Abstract: This report summarises the development of equipment for bottom sampling and the communities encounterd using that equipment. It provides the final definitive account of Petersens communities with illustrations and descriptions of each. Eight communities are identified: I The Macoma or Baltic; II The Abra; III The Venus; IV The Echinocardium - Filiformis; V The Brissopsis - Chiajei; VI The Brissopsis - Sarsii; VII The Amphilepis - Pecten; VIII The Haploops; with the deep Venus community the ninth. Petersen also compares his observations with those of Southern's Clare Island work and suggests the presence of Macoma and Venus communities and something approaching the Echinocardium - Filiformis communities. The fauna associated with Zostera marina beds is described.
