Abstract: This paper discusses sex ratios in populations of ballan wrasse, Labrus bergylta, from Galway Bay in the west of Ireland and the Gulf of St. Malo, northwest France, in 1987 and 1988. The populations were found to be monandric-protogynous in both areas, with all males deriving from females by inversion of the ovaries. Sexual inversion may occur up to two years earlier in the Galway population.
