Abstract: Records of the appearance of the Portuguese man-of-war, Physalia physalis L. on coasts off southwest Britain and southeast and southwest Ireland from 1834 to 1946 are given. It is concluded that winds rather than water movements were the main factor in transporting P. physalis towards the British Isles. Their likely origin being the Azores - mid - Atlantic region.
