Abstract: Abstract only. A number of Irish bays were selected and studied in relation to their physical and biological attributes. They include Belfast Lough, Carlingford Lough, Dublin Bay, Kinsale Harbour, Bantry, Kenmare and Dingle Bays, Galway, Mannin, Killary, Clew and Donegal Bays. An index derived from physical attributes was found to be a useful tool in making a priori sedimentological and biological descriptions of the bays.
