Abstract: The R.V. Lough Beltra has conducted annual young fish survey programmes in the gadoid nursery grounds of the north west Irish Sea since 1983. The results have produced a time series of recruitment indices (1984 - 1991) and this paper has focused on the way the cod time series are utilized by the ICES Working Group, using the 1991 Irish Sea cod assessment as an example.
