Abstract: Abstract only. Paper examines the historical evidence of coastal instability in north-west Europe with special reference to coastal dune movements and sandstorms over the last 1000 years. An increase in coastal dune movements and sandstorms since AD 1000 is associated with the deterioration in climate during the 'Little Ice Age'. The case study of the Culbin Sands in north-east Scotland is used to illustrate how quickly the movement of existing sand dunes can occur and some of the kinds of impacts these movements can generate.
