Abstract: This paper reports on the chemical analysis of the water-soluble mucilage of Furcellaria fastigiata, performed with the aim of elucidating its molecular structure. Quantities of ash, sulphur and galactose were determined and the ash analysed for cations. De-esterification, de-acetylisation, methylation, hydrolysis and chromatographic experiments were performed.
