Abstract: An experimental study into the effect of activity on physiological rates (ammonia excretion, oxygen consumption and filtration) on the Manila clam Tapes philippinarum and the native clam T. decussatus. Activity was rated by identifying and scoring shell gape, siphon extension and foot protrusion. The excretion rate of T. decussatus was significantly higher, but there was no significant difference in oxygen consumption or filtration rate. Absorption efficiency of both species was positively correlated with particulate organic matter level in seawater.
