Abstract: This paper describes the design and use of the Plankton Indicator, a weighted cylindrical tube towed through the water enabling the collection of plankton on a gauze disc. Plankton abundance, particularly that of Calanus finmarchicus, is correlated with herring catch. Samples were taken throughout the North Sea, and from the Atlantic to the northwest of both Ireland and Scotland.
