Abstract: The current distribution and abundance of Elminius modestus Darwin was examined and quantified at a number of sites around the Irish coast, using an abundance scale. It is now found in suitable habitats from Lough Foyle in the north, around the north-east, east and south coasts and the west coast as far north as Lough Swilly. The present findings are discussed in relation to previous surveys and records, since its first recorded appearance in Ireland in 1957.
