Abstract: This paper gives an early overview of the BioMar project which aims to map and describe the marine coastal biotopes of the Republic of Ireland. The paper is divided into the following headings: Coastal Management; BioMar; Biotope classification; Field survey methods (which includes site selection, techniques, and classification of marine biotopes); Data storage, analysis and presentation system (which includes the database used and Geographical Information System); and Discussion on the use of the data collected.
