Abstract: This paper begins with an historical review of those naturalists who were interested in the fauna of the southwest of Ireland, particularly the Dingle, Co. Kerry area, an epicentre of marine faunal diversity. It reviews the contributions of Michael Long to the marine faunal knowledge of that area and finally discusses the biogeography of Ireland's marine fauna. Finally, the paper provides a list of representative species from five marine biogeographical groups, all of which have been recorded from the southwest coast of Ireland, particularly from the Dingle area.
