Abstract: This paper describes settlement experiments at Black Rock Reef in inner Galway Bay and sterophotographic monitoring at Bird Rock in Kilkieran Bay. Settlement panels were colonised by a wide variety of ascidians. At Bird Rock, photography, collections and settlement panel observations provided a list of 131 epifaunal species. The epifaunal communities below 10 m were considered to fall into the Raspailia - Stelligera association of Könnecker (1973). The community is described in general, as well as the population dynamics of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis.
