Abstract: Drawing upon observations and records of botanists over 120 years, this book describes the ecology, threat status and conservation of the 21 most threatened stoneworts (Charophytes) in Britain & Ireland, with illustrations and distribution maps for each. Habitat and conservation issues are summarised, and an identification key to all British & Irish species is included. These relatively large and attractive algae grow mainly in calcareous freshwater and in brackish lagoons, but are very vulnerable to water pollution, and many species have declined markedly in recent years.
