Abstract: Paper presents a list of fish species (both shallow and deep water forms) recorded around Clare Island and in Clew Bay. The specimens were collected during expeditions to Clare Island, with records of species collected by the cruiser 'Helga' also included. The shores of Clare Island were found to have a limited number of species, while the shores of the mainland and the smaller islands had a higher number. A stretch of clean sand to the north and northeast of Clare Island, and occupying the north entrance to Clew Bay was noted; as elsewhere the substratum was rocky and unsuitable for trawling. The list of species, though extensive, is limited by the lack of records from shallow water areas and Zostera beds. The area surveyed was between Blacksod Bay, Co. Mayo and Ballynakill, Co. Galway. Species of interest were Gobius scorpioides (=Lebetus scorpioides), the smallest of British fishes, and Nerophis ophidion.
