Abstract: In an extensive survey of the Clare Island flora, 393 species of Phanerogamia and Pteridophyta were recorded. The species diversity found on Clare Island was compared to that found on other islands of the area, and for an island of its size it supported a comparatively rich floral community. The flora found on Bills Rocks and Mweelaun, and Caher islands was also recorded. The type of vegetation found on Clare Island was described, and included a group of maritime species. The flora was limited, as there was little sand on the island, and only one small patch of saltmarsh. A number of coastal species were found on the rocky shores and cliffs. A list of all the Clare Island flora is presented with notes on rare and common species, their habitat, and previous Irish records. The influence of man upon the flora and the origin of the flora is discussed.
