Abstract: This paper aims to establish the relationship between the spring and autumn schools of mackerel along the Irish coast. Mackerel were studied from the west and south Irish coasts, including Brandon, Co. Kerry and Kinsale, Co. Cork. Additional specimens from the English Channel, North Sea, and USA/Canada were also studied to examine migratory patterns. Mackerel were classified according to appearance, size and sex ratio. It is concluded that three geographically distinct races (Irish, British, American) exist, with a further race, intermediate between Irish and British, occurring between Brest and Scilly.
