Abstract: The paper discusses the poor economic performance of the Irish fishing industries, and considers economic and ecological effects of trawling. Particular attention is paid to Galway Bay, and to Co. Kerry and the Irish Sea. Spawning periods of fish are dealt with in an appendix.
