Abstract: This paper gives a history of British and Irish fisheries from 1633 onwards. The cod and ling fishing industries of the south and west Irish coasts are described, with particular attention paid to their growth since the Famine years (mid-19th century). Herring and mackerel fisheries are briefly discussed.
