Abstract: This article examines the options for dealing with oil spills. The advantages and disadvantages of each option are outlined. Skimmers, sorbents and dispersants are used to deal with spills at sea, while manual collection, mechanical collection and hydraulic washing deal with oil on the coast. The importance of a contingency plan is stressed. There is also an account of the Sea Empress spill of 15th February 1996, at Milford Haven, Wales.
