Abstract: The purpose of this contract was to gain information on the complete littoral zone of Northern Ireland with a view to the designation of marine nature reserves. In concert with a parallel survey of the sublittoral zone, this formed a nature conservation review of the Northern Ireland coastline, and many sites could then be listed in ranked order of nature conservation value. The Institute's remit did not merely extend to the collection of data but in collaboration with the Ulster Museum to the recommendation of a ranking of sites. The report covers work from January to December 1994 of the three year contract commencing January 1994. Emphasis was given in this report to the discussion of strategy and methods; detailed consideration of the data collected was left to later reports.
