Abstract: Seasonal trends in biochemical composition, meat condition and gonad development in Lough Foyle mussels, Mytilus edulis L., are related to phosphate, silicate, nitrate and phytoplankton standing crop in the Lough. It is concluded that a management strategy for Lough Foyle mussels should be orientated towards the grading and relaying of mussels into the more productive sub-tidal areas.
